How to get the most from your treatment.

General Dos and Don’ts for Receiving Acupuncture

• It is best to refrain from heavy work or exercise immediately before or after your treatment.• Do take some time for yourself after treatment to just ‘veg out’. You may also feel sleepy after your treatment; have a short nap if that is the case. DO NOT push yourself to do errands.• Do not eat a heavy meal or fast just before treatment. • Do not take recreational drugs or alcohol before or immediately after your visit.• It is important to be properly hydrated before and after treatment. In the days leading up to your appointment, drink 8 cups of plain water per day. In the four hours before your appointment, drink 2 to 4 cups (sip one cup per hour – don’t glug).• After treatment, continue to drink water to help your body eliminate any released metabolites, otherwise, you may experience a headache, especially if you are dehydrated. It is also helpful to eat some lightly cooked broccoli, cauliflower, kale, or cabbage after treatment – these vegetables supply the liver with substrates for detoxification.• Do not schedule a massage (especially deep tissue massage) in the 24 hours after acupuncture. (It is fine a day or two before or after).• Do not schedule medical procedures within a day or two of acupuncture.• DO let me know if you have any questions or concerns; acupuncture is safe and relaxing! These guidelines are just meant to help you get and maintain your results.
